White Spots on Nails
Hi,Just a general question. I have heard homeopaths asking patients about white spots on nails. What does it mean?
If somebody has white spots on hand nails or white lines on toe nails what does it mean, e.g. shortage of calcium or some other disease?
Thanks

Q: I sometimes get white spots on my fingernails. I've been told that they're a sign of a calcium deficiency, but I get plenty of calcium from my diet, and I do take a supplement every day. What causes the spots? -- Margot H.
A: The spots you notice are not caused by a calcium deficiency. They're called 'leukonychia' and are very common. Most of the time the white spots simply are a sign of some past injury to the matrix (base) of your nails. By the time the white spot shows up (about six weeks after the injury) you've probably forgotten all about banging or knocking your fingers. Sometimes, the injury can stem from a manicure that put excessive pressure on the base of the nails. The spots also can be a sign of an allergic reaction to nail polish or nail hardeners and, sometimes, are a symptom of a mild infection.
Whatever the cause, the spots are temporary and will grow out as your nails grow. However, it can take more than eight months for nails to grow out completely so the spots may be around for a while.
Sometimes, a change in the appearance of your nails does indicate an underlying disease, but these changes would be more dramatic than just the occasional white spot. Nails that turn completely white, for example, can indicate liver disease, but by the time this happens, you probably would have other symptoms.
Incidentally, in addition to the myth that white spots on the nails are a sign of calcium deficiency, you may also have heard that they indicate a zinc deficiency. That isn't true either. Neither is the well known but bizarre notion that the spots are due to eating too much Hellmann's mayonnaise (I'm not making this up).

Insomnia is number one symptom of Calcium deficiency. Rickets is another symptoms but there are more. Except nail color or texture.

Vow!!! I like the participation. I would like to thank all of you for your input/time, it was a very good learning experience.
Please educate me on one more issue:
With regards to tissue salts/ remedies like Calc Phos, Silecea, Natrum Sulf, when do you take low potencies (like 6X or 12X) and when do you take higher potencies like 200 etc?
I appreciate like always for all the help.
Best Regards,
Rajan

Dear Parachute
I am not denying that Silecia can help those who have spots on the nails. It is a grade 3 medicine, and hence most likely to help.
The spots on nails is a deviation from normality and definitely should be considered as a part of the totality.
However many times the presumed/assumed causations tend not to have any scientific basis.

Low potencies cover a broader spectrum of problems that are not very deep in nature. And they cover more number of such problems.
The higher you go, the more exact the match has to be between the symptom and the medicine.
The best analogy perhaps can be given with an ice cream cone.
The wider mouth corresponds to the superficial symptoms, and the area gets narrowed down, as you go deeper.

Dear Murthy,
Thanks for your reply. I understand that low potencies are more so for acutes and also can be used as a starting point to check if the remedy is correct before going on higher potencies.
I was under the impression that for tissue salts the action is different. So if I understand you correctly irrespective whether it is a tissue salt or any other homeopathic remedy the style of prescribing is same.
Thanks
Rajan

The tissue salts too are made as per the procedures laid down in homeopathic pharmacopia.
Though the biochemic theory looks at them from a different angle, they too have been proved as any other homeopathic medicine, and if selected to cover the totality, they work just like any other homeopathic medicine.
So, the potency selection criteria is the same for them too.
