hicups

My brother cannot sleep as he has hiccups. The sessions last for quite a long time (1.5 hours) and they are quite violent/burpy. It is not food related.
Any suggestions?

Take 2-3 teaspoons of sugar. Put it on your tongue and let it slide down your throat. Do not drink anything to wash it down. This always works for me. My hicups don't last that long, but do hurt if I don't take care of the problem.

How does one get rid of the hicups? We've already tried holding your breath and drinking water fast.
