Graves + Hives + Asthma

I hardly know where to begin. I had a sub-total thyroidectomy in 1996 after Grave's (hyperthyroid) diagnosis in 1994. Remission followed, but now my thyroid is active again. I am 38 years old. I've had three episodes of chronic hives (on 80% or more of my body, burning, itching): for 12 mos. in 1997, then in 2007-2008 for about 18 mos. Since last September I've been more or less free of hives, but now they're back since 4 weeks ago (beginning of July), more severe than before.

I am taking Nat Mur 30c weekly as a constitutional, sometimes alternating Ignatia 30c, and Apis 30c 3x daily for the hives. I felt that the Apis helped tremendously with the hives in 2007-2008, but it is NOT helping me now. They are worse with exercise, and upon waking. Sulphur 12c in addition to Apis brought no relief.

Asthma has been chronic since 2003, with some childhood episodes as well. Managed well currently with inhaled steroid, but no improvement with the Nat Mur.

I am female, tall and thin, brown hair, blue eyes, with a happy marriage (no kids) but with a stressful job. Latest hives outbreak due to stress (immediately followed visit with in-laws) or possibly using bug repellant spray on my skin??

Otherwise, I am generally irritable and depressed, with mood swings, some fatigue, lethargy, disinterest in things that used to interest me. Unable to set/achieve goals. Asocial, but don't want to be. Crave sugar, chocolate. Sleep is fine. I'm often cold. Often feel stressed and anxious. I have low DHEA and very low ferritin. Periods are now normal, but for a year they were too frequent: 15-20 days apart, causing anaemia. (Folliculinum helped tremendously to regulate my periods.)

Should I change my constitutional remedy? Any thoughts are most welcome. Thank you.

Patient ID: Sex: Female Age: 38

Please answer the following questions in a descriptive manner after careful analysis and recollection of previous experiences and happenings.

1. Describe your main suffering? A: Hives, over 90% of my body, daily. This current episode of daily hives began on July 6 – just four weeks ago. When I wake up, my skin is burning, itching, and hot, with raised patches on my legs, buttocks, abdomen, back, and chest. I usually have smaller wheals – also extremely itchy – on my feet, hands, and arms. On my neck and face, I’ll have what looks like red or purple spots along with some red wheals. These are not so itchy, but they look terrible. These initial hives will fade after 6-8 hours, but new hives appear in the afternoon into the evening – mostly on my backside and legs. In the morning I feel like my skin is very hot.

2. What other physical sufferings do you have in your body? A: Asthma since childhood. No symptoms during period of about 9 yrs old to 33 yrs. Now my asthma is moderately severe. I take inhaled steroid and feel I am physically dependent on it. I also take a daily antihistimine. I am mildly hyperthyroid – Graves disease. I have iron-deficiency anemia. History of food sensititives and digestive problems. Low adrenal function. My skin (especially legs and face) is very dry.

3. What mental sufferings/feelings do you have associated with your physical sufferings? A: Lots of self-pity. Depressed. Asocial. Lethargic. No confidence, low self-esteem, I feel unattractive, low energy. Feel that life is passing me by, and I’ll never accomplish anything.

4. What exactly do you feel when you are at your worst? A: I’m crying, because there is a feeling of hopelessness and frustration. I despair of ever getting better, and I don’t want to live this way.

5. When did it all start? Can you connect it to any past event or disease? A: 1997, when I was 26 years old. The hives began about one year after surgery to remove most of my thyroid. (Graves disease, diagnosed in 1994.) Possibly brought on by exposure to harmful chemicals. They lasted for only one year. Then I was free of hives until 2007 (10 years).

6. Which time of the day you are worst? A: 6:30 a.m., when I wake up.

7. What are the things which aggravate your suffering and which are those which ameliorate the same? A: Being in a warm bed, eating (anything), warm showers, exercise, tight clothing (i.e. waistbands) all aggravate the hives. Benadryl helps, as well as topical lotions. Cold showers feel nice on my hot skin, but make me very chilled.

8. Do your think your sufferings have relation to any external stimuli (like, change of place) or any internal biological changes in the body, like, menses (in females)? A: I am unsure about any such relation. I don’t think it’s related to menses – but I suspect it’s related to thyroid hormone imbalance.

9. When do you feel better, during hot weather or cold weather, humid or dry weather? A: I strongly dislike cold weather, but the hives seem to be worse in hot weather. Not 100% sure about that.

10. Describe your general mental set up? Are you Moody, Arrogant, Mild, Agreeable Changeable, Nervous, Suspicious, Easily offended, Quiet, Arguing, Irritating, Lazy etc. A: Quite moody, irritable. Very changeable (agreeable one minute, impatient and angry the next). Much tension and anxiety.

- How do you feel before or during a thunderstorm? A: Nothing remarkable.

- Do you like being consoled during your tough times? A: I do, but consolation always makes me more upset, which embarrasses me.

- Are you sensitive to external stimuli like smell, noise, light etc? A: Highly sensitive to smell. HIGHLY. Noise and light to some extent, but much more sensitive to smell.

- Do you have any typical habit or gesture like nail biting, causeless
weeping, talking to one self etc? A: All the above. Weeping has been frequent lately, I bite my nails constantly, and I talk to myself a lot.

- How do you feel about your friends, family, your children and especially your husband/wife? A: I feel distant from my friends. I am not close emotionally with my family. I like them fairly well, but I cannot trust them as I can friends. I have no children. My husband is my best friend and dearest partner and although our relationship is wonderful, I want to be alone a lot, and I get stressed and anxious if I don’t have enough alone time.

11. What are your fears and do you dream of any situation repeatedly? A: I fear walking over bridges – I have unwanted thoughts of jumping, and the thoughts can be discomforting. (I walk over a river twice every workday.) I fear insects, especially spiders, and any detection of a small motion in my peripheral vision startles me.

12. What do you crave for in food items and what are your aversions? A: I crave sugar, chocolate, cheese, rich foods (sauces), dairy, ice cream, fruit. There isn’t much I don’t like, but if pressed I would say I’m not fond of dry foods (i.e. potato chips or popcorn) and raw foods (i.e. raw veggies).

13. How is your thirst: Less, Normal or Excessive? A: Normal. Has been excessive in the recent past. It is normal now.

14. How is your hunger: Less, Normal or Excessive? A: At present, very normal.

15. Is there any kind of food which your body can’t stand? A: I cannot tolerate wheat. Otherwise, none to my knowledge.

16. Is your sweat normal or less or more? Where does it sweat more: Head, Trunk or Limbs? A: Sweat is normal.

17. How is your bowel movement and stool type? A: Mostly normal. Lately have been more constipated, but stool was too loose today. I guess it alternates. There is often mucous.

18. How well do you sleep? Do you have a particular posture of sleeping? A: I sleep very well, about 6-7 hours per night. I like to sleep on my left side, fetal position.

19. Do you think you are able to satisfy your sexual desires in general? A: My sex drive is very low.

20. What peculiar or strange sensation do you have in any part of your body at times? Do you sometimes feel ‘ as if…..’ in some part of the body? A: None.

21. What medications have been taken earlier by you to treat the diseases and do you have any particular symptom surfacing after the medication? A: Zyrtec (antihistimine), Singulair, Flovent, all daily. I’ve been taking Nat Mur weekly as a constitutional, sometimes alternating with Ignatia. I’ve used Apis, Ledum, and Urtica Urens as acute remedies. I've tried both Sulphur and Psorinum. No improvement. I take Benadryl daily, which gives me substantial relief from the hives -- only temporarily of course.

22. What major diseases are running in your family? A: Thyroid disorders, asthma, allergies, non-hodgkins lymphoma.

23. Describe, how do you look like? Describe your overall appearance. A: I am 5’7”, weight is 127, with long, brown, wavy hair and blue eyes. Nice features, attractive. Very pale skin. Some freckles. Thin waist, but with cellulite on my thighs, calves and abdomen. Somewhat stoop-shouldered. Very small foot size for my height.

your constitution is not NAT MUR as you are a cold person and nat mur is a hot remedy. however, you are close to mat mur mentally.

most of your mentals are close to SEPIA and i strongly feel, this may be your constitutional remedy.

please take SEPIA 200C only five doses, each dose 12 hours apart.

start on one day morning and within the next 48 hours you should be taking all the five doses in empty stomach and clean mouth. dont take any food or water one hour before or after the doses.

this is a constitutional dose set and you should wait for 10 days at least to observe your changes.

come back to me after 10 days of taking the remedy for further prescription.
