Learning Homoeopathy on One's Own - Restarting
Hi AllIn view of the previous thread by this title was hijacked by some unsavory and futile debates, I am re-starting the thread with the hope that this time it will serve the purpose that it is intended to serve.

To get a basic overview of Homoeopathy, one can start with the following book:
1. Homoeopathy and the Modern Man - George Vithoulkas
Thereafter, to get the basics of Homoeopathic Philosophy, one should go through the following books:
2. Organon, 6th Ed. - Hahnemann
3. Lectures on Homoeopathic Philosophy - James Tyler Kent
4. Studies in the Philosophy - C.M. Boger
After having gone through these books, a better understanding will come by if one goes through the following book:
5. Lectures on the Theory & Practice of Homoeopathy - Hughes
6. Hahnemann Revisited - Luc de Schepper
By now, the learner would have gained enough insight into the philosophy of Homoeopathy to start the study of the materia medica. Remember, while studying the above works, one will get glimpses of many a drug pictures. One should go through the same but should not venture out and start treating patients on the back of this sketchy knowledge.
STUDY OF THE MATERIA MEDICA
Study of the Materia Medica is one of the most tricky aspects and one needs to be very careful to get the right books. I always recommend my students to start their study with the following two books:
7. Lectures on Materia Medica : James Tyler Kent
8. Homoeopathic Drug Pictures : M L Tyler
These pictures will help one to form a basic idea of the drug in one's mind. One has to be very careful here to be very particular with every drug and not be in any kind of haste. This is a time-taking process and there is no substitute to hard work in this case.
While studying the materia medica, it is of utmost importance to keep revising the concepts of homeopathic philosophy while at the same time trying to gain a working knowledge of Human Anatomy and Physiology.
Once a true aspirant of learning this marvelous science has gone through the basics suggested above, one can go though the following books for advanced learning:
9. Dictionary of Materia Medica (3 volumes) : Dr. Clarke
10. Lectures on Clinical Materia Medica - Dr. Farrington
11. Allen's Keynotes and Characteristics with comparisons - H. C. Allen
12. Keynotes on Materia Medica - R Murphy
13. Times of Remedies & Moon Phases - C. M. Boger
Next in the art of Homeopathic Prescribing comes a proper knowledge of repertorization. I always recommend starting with Kent's repertory. To get a handle on this art, I recommend the following books:
14. How to use the repertory - Bidwell
15. 44 Remedies and 22 Eliminating Rubrics - W. Paul
If someone follows the mentioned order properly, one would have gained a working knowledge of Homeopathic Prescribing. Then, one should ideally observe an experienced practitioner for at least a couple years to understand the principles better while still revising his books.
Some of the advanced books that may interest a student at that stage are mentioned below:
16. Achieving and Maintaining the Simillimum - Luc de Schepper
17. Chronic Disease - Hahnemann
18. The Chronic Miasm - T. F. Allen
19. Notes on Miasms - P. S. Ortega
20. How to Take the Case & to find the Simillimum - NASH E.B.
21. New Remedies, Clinical Cases, Lesser Writings - J T Kent
22. The Art of Interrogation - Schmidt
23. The Lesser Writings - Boenninghausen
24. Constitutional Medicine - Clarke
25. Predictive Homeopathy (3 Parts) - Prafull Vijaykar
26. Case Analysing & Prescribing Techniques - Robin Murphy
27. Study of Materia Medica and Case Taking - C. M. Boger
28. Indications of Miasms - Harimohan Choudhury
29. Characteristic Materia Medica - W. H. Burt
30. Physiological Materia Medica - W. H. Burt
31. Comparative Materia Medica - Gross
32. Comparative Materia Medica - Farrington
33. Lesser Writings with Therapeutic Hint - Farrington
...and many more.
Happy learning!

Homeopathy can only be learnt and mastered when trained and untrained homeopaths who share this passion complement each other instead of denigrating each other .
U have rightfully laid down the steps ( books ) that shall help us climb the hallowed trail.

The first homeopathic book I read was Organon. Though many say it is difficult to understand, I was engrossed with it so much that I finished the first reading from cover to cover non stop.
I must have read it atleast 20 times by now. Every time I see some new points which I didn't pay attention to earlier.
The second book I read was the lectures on homeopathic philosophy by Kent. It is a commentary on the principles enunciated in Organon and you can't afford to miss it, if you are genuinely interested in homeopathy.
Before reading other books about case taking, using repertory, remedy selection, posology etc..it is necessary that one should understand the philosophy behind homeopathy thoroughly.
You can follow it up with science of Homeopathy by Dr.George Vithoulkus.
By now, there shouldn't be any doubt in your mind about why one remedy at a time is an absolute must for getting proper results in homeopathy.
Read and reread till you understand this concept. THen and then only look into other books.

hi Niel,
I must confess I haven't read them, but if you have, how do you feel about 'Homeopathy: Beyond Flat Earth Medicine' by Timothy R. Dooley and 'Pertinent Questions and Answers about Homeopathy' by Phyllis Speight. These two books would be an introduction to homeopathy for the patients and the uninitiated ofcourse :)

Hi Faustian, I have not read the two books listed by you. Maybe, someone who has rad them can give a better idea.
Vikas has suggested two very good book. I would like to add Vithoulkas' 'Essence of Materia Medica' to this list as well.
I would completely agree with Murthy that one needs to get a firm grip on the philosophy of Homeopathy before moving any further. Sadly, there are so many Homeopaths today who, out of sheer lack of understanding of the basics, practice Polypharmacy and n number of things including prescribing 'This for that'. The methods they follow cannot be termed as Homeopathy even remotely.
Warm regards

The professional homeopaths ( in most cases ),particularly who are new , are under tremendous pressure and stress to deliver as they have to earn livlihood out of clinical practice and this also contributes to deviations from the right path .

I agree.
It is indeed unfortunate that in India, people consider Homeopathy as cheap treatment and are not ready to pay consulting charges. This acts as a natural inducement to give as many pill packets as possible since they charge on that basis only.

Apart from the Organon, Chronic Diseases, Kent, Allen, Nash, Clarke, Farrington, Tyler, etc., I think Boericke is a good materia medica for beginners.
Thanks for this thread. As I do a lot of reading on my own, I appreciate the suggestions.

This thread is intended at creating a breed of non regulated and non medical doctors who will one day play with the lives of innocent people in the name of homoepathy.
This is specialised education dealing with serious health related issues and is not like reading a fiction novel or learning how to cook.
Promoting cuackary is a crime.

It is very very essential for those enthusiastic about homeopathy to know what it actually is.
So, learn the basics and choose your doctor wisely.
As I said earlier there are many ways to know the basics of homeopathy. The above course mentioned is designed by qualified doctors, who are also lecturers/professors in reputed homeopathic colleges.

If I become enthusiastic about surgery what do it do? Learn the basics about anatomy and then go to learning about surgical disorders and then learn about procedures and then start practicing it.
If this is NOT ALLOWED FOR SURGERY then why is it ok for homeopathy. After all this is also a medical science? and any body can get any case any time.
