strep throat
hello...my 17 year old son was in italy last week for a school trip. on the 5th day his throat become very red and swollen and he had great difficulty swallowing. he ran a very high fever with a bad headache for 3 days. a doctor on the trip diagnosed him with strep throat and gave him 3 doses of an antibiotic.when he returned home on monday, he no longer had fever and only a slight sore throat and felt fine except for jet lag.
this morning he woke up with the same symptoms as he had last week: fever, sore throat, headache. i would rather not put him on an antibiotic (and wished that he never started on one to begin with) but his doctor insists that he will not get well without completing a full dose (5 days) of an antibiotic and that the reason he is sick is because he only took a partial dose (3 days insterad of 5).
any advice? antibiotics seem to "help" our bodies recover from illness rather quickly...but seem to cause more illness and make us even sicker later. i would like to avoid antibiotic use if possible...though his doctor thinks i am making a very poor choice and claims that not using antibiotics when we are ill is what makes us sicker.
this can be quite frustrating topic...but for iver 2 years my family has had several bouts of sinus infections, sore throats and colds. each time we were treatd with antibiotics and steriods... but we always seemed to be sick again with the exact symptoms within a month or two. i am convinced that the antibiotics and steriods actually made us sicker and have avoided their use for almost a year.
i would appreciate any advise. thank you..

please let us know more about the sore throat, fever and headache.
Is his throat better or worse when swallowing empty, solids, liquids, hot or cold?? what sort of pain does he experience? does the pain extend to the ears or throat?
How high is his fever and is it constant?
is there any time of day or night when he feels better or a lot worse?
can you tell us about the headache - is it thumping or mild or any other kind of pain? what helps the headache feel more comfortable? what makes the headache worse?

also - if he can remember - did he get very hot or cold before feeling ill? was there anything else at the time that could have made him feel ill?

thank you erika for your quick reply...
Is his throat better or worse when swallowing empty, solids, liquids, hot or cold??....jacobs throat is worse when swallowing empty or solids and somewhat better when swallowing hot liquids.
what sort of pain does he experience? does the pain extend to the ears or throat?...his pain does not extend to the ears...he describes his pain as "it feels like my tonsils are at the back of my teeth"
How high is his fever and is it constant? his fever today is 100.5, last week when he was ill his fever reached 102.5 for 3 days. his fever has been constant as of this morning.
is there any time of day or night when he feels better or a lot worse?...he woke up in the middle of the night feeling very bad and was sweating. he felt somewhat better this morning. he called from school (he has many tests today) and wanted me to bring him something for his throat pain.
can you tell us about the headache - is it thumping or mild or any other kind of pain?...it is not thumping...more of a constant ache.
what helps the headache feel more comfortable? what makes the headache worse?....he feels better when lying down, i do not know what makes it worse.
also - if he can remember - did he get very hot or cold before feeling ill?...he became hot...but expereinced chills with the fever.
was there anything else at the time that could have made him feel ill?...he had slight nasal congestion before leaving for italy...but felt fine until the 5th day there and spent 2 days in bed.

the headache could be mostly due to dehydration from the fever - get him to drink plenty of warm boiled water - this will help the fever go through naturally. The fever is the body's healthy way of dealing with infections and viruses and only needs bringing down when it is dangerously high.
a gargle made with sage tea (use dried sage like tea, strain, allow to cool until lukewarm) - do not drink or swallow the sage tea, a small amount swallowed will not harm but a lot of sage can be poisonous (refer to a herbal if not sure - we use it in cooking so you know that certain amounts are perfectly ok).
To begin homeopathically I would suggest belladonna 30c or 200c - only repeat doses if you need to . Another remedy to use would be the ABC remedy (not after the name of this site, it means a combination of aconite, belladonna and chamomilla) - a 30c in this is fine.
These suggestions are just first aid suggestions - from the history you give it would be better to treat more deeply than this once you have dealt with the current acute fever/throat situation.

thank you erika...i will start with the belladonna this afternoon i will not know until i get home which potency i have...i am almost certain i have 30c...if i have a lower potency will that be okay to use as well? there is only one health food store here that sells remedies and they do not stock any remedies higher than 12c..
