Saw Palmetto - Are these side affects from it?
Over the past 7 years I've had epididymitis twice. The first time, the doctor gave me meds which caused my knees to swell, so that was stopped after about two days. I did research and found Saw Palmetto. Took that and had relief within a few days. kept taking it for about a month and the epididymitis went away.Just recently I got a case of epididymitis that wouldn't go away on its own, so I picked up some Saw Palmetto, Cranberry, Garlic Oil, and my regular multi-vitamin.
I was taking the 'recommended' dose of the Saw Palmetto on the bottle (which was 450mg per cap taken 3-5 times per day). Initially I started out taking between 4 and 5 caps per day, and then intended to cut back after a week or two.
The epididymitis is pretty much gone (and I firmly believe the Saw Palmetto helps cure it), however, here is the reason for my writing today:
* As I've been researching on the Internet I'm finding most people recommend a very reserved dose (350mg/day), while the bottle I had (CVS) recommends 450mg 3-5 times per day!!! That's a huge difference. Anyway, about two weeks ago I started having pain in my chest. This continued for two days, and I stopped all of my vitamins thinking one of them might be doing something. After a day being clear, the pain went away. Popped one Saw Palmetto and the pain came back.
So I stopped the Saw Palmetto and have not taken it for about two weeks now. This past Saturday I went to the doctor because I have been feeling a 'fluttering' or like 'butterflies' in my chest. They did an EKG, heart monitor, and took blood work and didn't find anything alarming. I was also hooked to a Holter monitor and am awaiting results.
My question is - is it possible this high dose of Saw Palmetto did something to my heart?! My family does not have a history of any young heart issue (e.g. people died of heart attacks but at age 70 or 80). I should mention that I am 30.
Thoughts? Will these palpitations go away as the Saw Palmetto works it's way out of my system?

This is just a forum. Assume posts are not from medical professionals.
Mr Saw Palmetto,
Your posts via a Google search are actually what brought me here.
At this point I've decided not to touch it ever again and if I do certainly not in the quantity recommended on the bottle. I should have done some research prior to taking it this second time I guess, but who would think the recommended dosage would be so much higher than what is 'standard'?
One additional thing I've noticed is I seem to be having indigestion and I've read about indigestion triggering the vagal nerve which can cause some heart issues. I'm still suspicious the Saw Palmetto had something to do with one or both items.
The 'symptoms' do seem to be getting better (now almost a week after I went to the ER with a feeling that I've never experienced before in my life), so I'm hoping another week or two and I'll be back to normal.
From what I've read you are still having problems - has that improved at all?

Just to update:
Just thought I'd update this for anyone else who finds it at some point down the road. The palpitations have gone away -- and oddly enough the doctors saw nothing on the heart monitor even when I felt them. Shortly after I had them, I had indigestion for about 1 1/2 weeks, which makes me wonder if the two were some how connected.
At any rate, both are now gone and I seem to have returned back to normal -- after stopping the Saw Palmetto.
