Epileptic dog type Phosphorous
My dog suffered grand mal epileptic seizures every 3/4 weeks with PB and KBr treatment. We wanted to reduce the medication and went to homeopath who said he is a Phosphorous type. My dog is very nervous, does not like the water and dark, his ears and head heat up before seizures and always comes to us to advice when it is going to start. His eyes remain open during the attack. After the seizure it seems as he does not see anything for a while, as bumps on things, but does recognize us and our voices. The homeopath told us to give him phosphorous 1 week and rest 3 weeks, cuprum metallic twice a day and lachesis every 2 days, but attacks are now every 10 days and last time had 4 attacks within 3 hours, so things are going worse. Please advice what shall we do ? ThanksRudolf on 2011-05-12

Yes we have reported the changes and she told us to give him additional phosphorous everyday for 2 to 3 more weeks and even try to give the phosphorous during the attack to see if he recuperates better. We tried it and the recuperation was perfect, he went to drink water without bumping into things and even wanted to play. We put a Diazepan enema just in case, as he was a bit nervous, and within less than 30 min a very big grand mal seizure accorred (lasted more than 3 min.), some minor ones (2 or 3 followed). Our homeopath told us to stop the phosphorous for several weeks and continue with the Cuprum metallic and lachesis. We have also returned to the KBr (which we had stopped 2 weeks after starting the homeopath treatment), 8 days have passed now and we are waitting for the weekend. Thanks for your response

You have not stated the age of your dog and for how long he has been suffering from epileptic seizures.
I had a Rhodesian Ridgeback who died at age 14 and in the last 2 years of his life he presented the same epileptic fits which the vet was not able to treat.
I gave him Arnica 1M in the Wet dose taken thrice daily and he spent the last year of his life in comfort without any fits.
The Wet dose of any Homeopathic remedy is made as follows:
Order the remedy in the Liquid pack in Alcohol, also referred to as Liquid Dilution in a bottle preferably with a dropper arrangement.
Get a 500ml bottle of Spring Water from the nearest supermarket.
Pour out about 3cm of water from the bottle to leave some airspace.
Insert 3 drops of the remedy into the bottle and shake the bottle hard at least 6 times before you sip a capfull of the bottle or a large teaspoonful which is the dose.
Shaking the bottle hard is homeopathic succussion and this enhances the effect of the remedy on the user.
You can give your dog a capful which you can pour into his cheek or directly into his mouth and report his response in a week.
It is understood that you will stop all other medication if you use my therapy.

Thanks for the reply Joe. Rudolf is a white Swiss Shepherd (or white German Shepherd) of 2,5 years of age. He has been suffering the attacks since October 2010 and the problem is that most of them are grand mal that repeat several times within the same day.

Are his eyes pink in colour?
This would indicate that he is an Albino and this could explain his present ailment.

I have another question. Should I stop the KBr and PB medications gradually while starting with the Arnika, how ? Should I also stop giving him the Cuprum metallic, Lachesis and Phosphorous ? Great thanks for your help and support.
Rudolf last decade
I would prefer that you use Arnica 1M in the Wet dose exclusively as it cannot help your dog when mixed with other remedies.

Dr. Joe De Livera, I am a little afraid of eliminating the PB & KBr totally as we have tried to remove a little bit of KBr following our vets recommendations and homeopathic treatment and fits became more frequent and worse. My dog almost went into status epilpeticus last time and it was very hard for us to calm him down. We really thought that we had to take him to emergencies and it was very terrible situation that we don´t really like to live again. Thanks

OK. Since you are apprehensive of causing him further problems you may give the Arnica 1M in the Wet dose and report any difference in his response in 48 hours.

He isn't being given the correct medicines, and there is a possibility you have, or will get, side effects from the wrong medicines. Nobody should be giving 2-3 remedies at once - this shows that they do not know which remedy is correct (so they are guessing).
The specific symptoms of the fit should be used to determine the remedy, rather than just general 'epilepsy' remedies being given.
It would also be useful to get a full case history of your poor puppy - medical, personal, and very importantly what happened just before the epilepsy started or around the same time.
If you can give an exact description of what happens just before, during, and after the fit, with any observations or impressions you have at that time.

Dr. De Livera and Dr. Kempson, thanks for yor wise recommendations.
Rudolf is a very nervous dog since puppy; he didn´t like to be touch in the back, didn´t like strangers, didn´t like water/rain (but yes snow), was not so obedient and always wanted to play. When he was about 1 year he became very sick with high fever, body shaking/trembling, vomiting, diarrhea and didn´t want to eat. The vet said he had ulcers from the mouth to the intestines (didn´t know why at that time), so he started taking dacortine (prednisone), antibiotics and stomach protector fot about 6 months, as whenever we took out the prednisone the fever and shaking reapeared. After that he was more or less ok, with stomach upset from time to time, and so we changed foods. When he was about 1 year we bought him one of those doors for dogs that you put so he can go to the yard while we are working. I started training him with treats and by going in and out through it myself because he was very afraid of the sound when the door closed (I think). One day I asked him to go in house through his door but since he didn´t want to I went in first, he came right after me, but when he was in I saw that the left side of his body and face was strange (as if having and ictus), his back legs and hip started shaking and in a few seconds he was laying on his left side having his first terrible grand mal seizure. Vet made electrocardiogram and blood analysis and everything was fine. 15 days after he had a 2nd fit, so vet told us to start with PB. Seizures started happening every 15 to 20 days and he started having more than 3 within few hours, so we started with PB & KBr. Frequency of fits improved to 20 to 26 days, but nothing else improved. When he seizes he always fall over his left side and keep eyes open with dilatated pupils, but he was never pee nor poo during the seizures. About 3 months ago I found meat in my yard that he started to eat, I was afraid and took them to the police; laboratory said they were poisonned with cyanide, so we gave him B12 vitamine. He is so strong that he made it also this time, but then we started to think that maybe someone is trying to poison our dog since little. About 2 months ago with homeopathy (P, Cu met. &Lachesis) as we don´t like what PB & KBr are doing to his body, we eliminated the KBr in about 2 weeks from starting homeopathy, but fits started to happen evey 10 days. They were grand mal also but it seems as if recuperation was faster, so vet told us to keep the phosphorous for 3 continued weeks. In about 13 days from this he had 4 very bad seizures within a very short time, he was so nervous that we almost had to take him to emergencies because seizures didn´t stop. We stoped the P but we continue with the Cu met., Lachesis, PB and we have started again with the KBr (which we had removed), 12 days have passed since then, but I am sure he will have another fit soon. Please help. We really appreciate it. Great thanks

Describe him to me. Describe what he is like. Describe him as a person.
So he falls over the left, his eyes stay open. Anything else about the fits during?
What about after, what does he do, what is he like?
Describe more about his fears.
Describe more about his anxieties.
Anything unusual or peculiar about him, for a dog?

Rudolf is a beautiful white Swiss Shepherd of 2 years and 7 months of age with very large and erect ears, his eyes are big and honey like color, the skin around them is black (as if he wears eyeliner). His nose is big and black, and his mouth is also big and his black lips ripple a little bit at the back. The funny thing about his mouth is that he has very little front teeth (4 up & 4 down), the others are big and he has 2 big black spots in the middle of his tongue. His body is big and long and normal height. He has white short fur, but it is very long around his neck (like a lion) bottom and tail. His fur curles behind the ears, along the legs and tail. His skin is pink. He has very strong body, legs and paws. Almost 50 kg weight.
Character: he is a very happy dog that wants to play and fight with us(playing) when he fills fine, he is not possessive as easily shares toys, foods, etc., but is not so obedient as sometimes thinks it is a play. He likes the visit of our parents and is adorable with them and us, he likes to be the center of attention. When they fall asleep he likes to awake them with kisses or with his nose. He is a good puller during walks and doesn´t like male dogs at all, a male dog bite him badly at night when he was an 8 month puppy. He doesn´t bark much, only if he sees a male dog or a teanage boy close to our home. He is nervous at night, doesn´t rest well and moves/drinks, etc. almost every 2 hours.
During fits: before the fit he comes near us with a fear look to advice us that something is going wrong. He starts to shake his back legs and hips first and then falls on his left side (always). He open his mouth and a lot of foam comes out of it, but then he closes it and starts to open it and close it very quickly. His eyes are open and pupils dilated. His legs and body shakes very hardly. The fits last for about 1:30 to 2 min at the beginning, but the last one have lasted for about 3 mins.
After the fits: he is very nervous and breathes rapidly. He passes around and bumps into things. He doesn´t see us but hear and recognizes our voices and wants to drink and go out for air. His head and ears are hot. This may last for more than an hour and if we are not able to calm him down another fit strikes. If he lays in the floor with his head and front legs forward (like a carpet) another fit strikes, but if he lays on his side then calms down and falls to sleep and then we know fits are over for the day (if he sleeps for more than 2 hours).
Fears: he fears the night/dark (I think he remembers when he was beaten by the male dog), and fears the strange noices at night that seem as if something was moving. He is not afraid of fireworks or loud noices. He doesnt like the water, nor the direct sun (specially to his eyes)and prefers the shadow.
Anxieties: he gets very nervous when going to new places. When we went out with him for holidays last summer he was not able to sleep for 2 days. A few days before and after a strike he becomes very very smelly and hard to control because of that, this is like a signal to us that something is becoming wrong. When we leave him at home I know he has a little separation anxiety and falls to sleep inside the home, he even ate the wall when little but not any more. He likes female dogs very much, and wants to leak them, but does not have experience.
Peculiarities: he wants to play hiding very much. Maybe 3 months from now we are starting to see that his head shakes a little, maybe like starting to develop parkinson, when he is like resting and sometimes he folds his tongue in an strange way towards the left side. We are a bit worried about this signs also.
I think it is more or less a description of Rudolf. Great thanks and kind regards.

Ok to me this looks a lot like an Opium case. Are you able to get hold of Opium 200c?

I will try to find out in homeopathic stores here in Spain, or I will have to ask for it via Internet. I will keep you informed.

I will probably get the Opium 200C within 2 or 3 days, in the form of pellets. I will advice you when I get them. May you kindly advice how shall I give the Opium 200C to Rudolf ? Thanks
When I returned home from work today I saw a stain of foam in the kitchen floor close to Rudolf´s door to the yard and his water spilled out of place. I think he had a fit this morning but we were not there to help him. There was really nothing out of place, only his water, so probably the recuperation was better this time. I think that what may have triggered the fit is the reflection of the sun in the kitchen´s floor; we are going to cover this just in case. Rudolf appeared normal when I saw him, he came running to me with his smile, but after a few minutes I reallized he was very calmed and this is not so normal. I have been with him for 2 hours now and fit has not repeated.

Rudolf had another fit yesterday at 21:15 when we were starting our walk and he saw a female dog friend running after a ball. We got hold of him cars may drive through the street and the seizure started. His back legs and hip started to shake, he sat and then layed down. His body started shaking in that position and after half a minute he laid over his RIGHT side, it was the first time, and grand mal seizure started, since the floor was ver hard he damaged a little one of his legs and paws. It lasted around 1,30 mins. Mouth open with foam coming out of it, then closed near the end and tries to take air through it but it seems difficult for him since it is closed and full of foam. Eyes open and pupils dilated. When the fit was over he got up quickly, as always, and started to walk around without seeing. We told him to go back home and we went back slowly. We put ice in his back, as his head and ears get hot and gave him a little of vanilla ice cream plus diazepan enema to avoid clusterings and calm him down. Fits didn´t repeat during the night.
One thing I forgot to say is that sometimes a few drops of blood comes out from his penis when the fit is over. It doesn´t happen all the times and this time didn´t happen.
I just wanted to share yesterdays story with you. I knew from 2 or 3 days ago that a fit was going to strike soon by his behaviour and it sure did. Thanks for listening.

Yes, we all feel terribly, it is very sad to see suffering.
Dr. Kempson, I am going to get the Opium 200 C today within a few minutes. May you kindly advice how shall I give it to him ? With the Arnika that Dr. De Livera suggested also ? What about the other medicines he takes for the fits Phenobarbital and Potasium Bromide ? Of course we should stop the old homeopath treatment with Phosphorous, Cuprum metallic and Lachesis right ? Thanks again,

Do not mix the medicines - one only should be used at a time. Arnica does not cover the symptoms. While there are other medicines that might be needed, Opium is my first choice.
Do not stop his orthodox medication unless you feel that he is getting serious side effects from them.
Dissolve 2 pellets into a mixture of alcohol and water (1:5) in a small bottle with a dropper (cleaned if you have used the bottle for something else).
Hit the bottle firmly on the palm of the hand twice, and place 1 drop into his mouth. Do this once and let me know what happens after 24 hours.

What type of alcohol shall I use, drink alcohol ? So I do not stop the PB and KBr until we start to see improvement, right ? Thanks a lot.
Rudolf last decade
Any spirit alcohol will do - I typically use vodka or brandy.
Stopping medication can in itself create symptoms, which makes it confusing to differentiate from remedy reactions. Unless the patient is in immediate risk, I prefer not to withdraw their medication until it is clear the underlying disease is improving.
