Investigating the issue of shame
Hi,I'm a final year homeopathy student in London, UK. I'm working on my final year project and looking at the issue of shame, how important a role it plays in homeopathic practice and what experience homeopaths have of dealing with patients who have problems in this area. I'd be really interested in hearing people's thoughts and experience on this. What sorts of issues have people come across in practice? What sorts of health problems (mental, emotional, physical) do people with shame related issues have? What sort of approaches to working with shame issues have colleagues used or heard about?
Thanks in advance for any interest in this topic, and I look forward to some interesting learning!
Be well, be happy,

This is just a forum. Assume posts are not from medical professionals.
You are as much in the area of psychology as homeopathy with this subject.
What are the REASONS for shame, is impotant .
Psychoñogy is as important as homeopathy in this area .

Hi,
thanks a lot for your thoughts on this.
For 'Walkin' - Yes, the background psychology is important here - from the research I've done so far, there's a resurgence of interest in this issue among psychologists and psychotherapists. This has led me to think about the way that the psychological state (mental/emotional state) can be understood homeopathically - i.e. what signs and symptoms or states we might observe in homeopathic terms that indicate shame is present, or conditions that are linked with shame. What is a homeopathic understanding of shame, I wonder?
For Nesha - thanks for making the point about the distinction between shyness and shame - it's sometimes difficult to know what lies behind shyness when seeing a patient for the first time... Because people with shame issues have often developed techniques for 'covering up' their problem so that they can cope (e.g. keeping something they consider shameful a secret), I wonder if this is not only about individualising, but also driving their condition deeper - in the particular case of shame - so it begins to produce a physical picture or even a more chronic mental/emotional picture... - if you have any more thoughts on this, it'd be great to hear from you again. I'm also realising that shame is going to be culturally conditioned too...
Again, many thanks for your comments and would welcome more!
